Liminal Love captures the correlation between the advancement of technology and the decline in romantic relationships in Tokyo, Japan. Howard utilized Love Hotels, Manga Cafes, and Game Rooms to photograph people she met through online meet-up apps. Originally interested in the term “Herbivore”, Howard broaden her research to be more inclusive of all genders and sexualities. Through informational interviews with her subjects Howard found that they were more in love with the process rather than outcome of searching for romance. The smartphone was the common denominator in every case which served as a tool for autonomy and self-actualization.

This body of work was made possible by the Jan Meyer Traveling Fellowship 87’ and the Maryland Institute College of Arts Photography Department.
